Hey there, Strangers, welcome to 2017!

Man alive, is this year gonna be a big one for me over at Genre Readermy NEW publishing house that I co-run. Yes, aren’t I a bit of a Billy-big-boots?

This year—this month in fact!—will see us begin to launch a big ol’ pile of exciting genre books that you’re gonna love. I won’t get into an exhaustive list or our upcoming titles here, but the first things to launch will be a gaggle of Urban Fantasy books: a bunch of different series set in the same magical universe we call The Uncanny Kingdom.

These books will be super fast-paced, exciting, scary, and, above all, fun. You’re going to love reading these things!

So, put on your reading trousers and settle down for the best in Urban Fantasy. The Uncanny Kingdom is about to open its doors!

Why was I in a crap-smeared tunnel underneath London chasing after a fairy? Because fairies aren’t the creatures of delight all those kids books told you about…”

~ Stella Familiar, Familiar Magic

“A crowd gathered around the crash site, hands over their mouths, staring at the devastation before them. Not one of them was looking at me though. It’s like I wasn’t there. Like I was invisible. That’s when the pieces finally fell into place. I couldn’t be seen, I wasn’t injured and I didn’t have a heartbeat. I was a frigging ghost, wasn’t I? No Wayze, Swayze.”

Over the Garden Wall & Writing, Writing, Writing

Hey there, STRANGERS! Here’s what’s on my mind:

Over The Garden Wall…

Okay, if you’ve read any of my Tales From Between, you know I’m a sucker for kids wandering into spooky danger, and this cartoon miniseries ticks a lot of my boxes.

It’s odd, and weirdly emotional. And kinda scary at times! Not sure where it’s available, but go hunting and I’m sure you’ll find it.

Good lordy-lord, I have been busy! Well… I could have been busier….and further along. I’m really good at sitting at my laptop doing nothing for long stretches. You think you’re probably good at procrastination, but you ain’t got nuthin’ on me, son.

But what have I been up to?! I thought I’d give a little run down of what I’m doing, and what’s coming up:

  • Apocalypse Hill

How’s that for a sexy title? Hm? HMMM…? Apocalypse Hill is a bit Stephen King with a dollop of Gaiman slopped on top. Maybe. Probably not.

It’s a three-part ‘miniseries’. Each book is around 40-to-45 thousand words (so short books) and they piece together to tell one tale. The first book is in with the editor, and I’ve finished the first draft of part two.

This gets pretty dark at times. Yeah.

It’s my biggest prose project so far. I suppose I should work out what in the heck happens in part 3…

  • A Starless Night

This was going to be a one-off novelette, like Sixty-Six, but inspired by Eamon Ambrose’s Zero Hour series,  I’ve decided to put it out as short episodes before collecting it together in one book. I mean, why the heck not? It’s good to experiment.

So it’ll be out in episodes that are 8-to-10 thousand words each. Probably four episodes, then the complete collection. If I like it, then I might continue the model and put out further short works in this way. If not, uh, I  guess I won’t.

It’s a sci-fi/fantasy/time travel thingy. With scary kid monsters wielding knives of bone. COR!

  • Urban Fantasy Series

This is my first proper series. The Tales From Between were really stand alone stories linked by a fantasy world, but this will be an ongoing series featuring the same main characters.

It’s an urban fantasy series; they seem quite popular right now, so I’ll be putting mine out just as people get bored with them. I’ve plotted out the first book and knocked out the first few thousand words. As soon as Apocalypse Hill wraps up, it’ll be the project I focus on most.

  • The Night Forest

A spin-off from The Tales From Between series?! MAYBE!

The ghost and the adventurer walked further into the night forest.

Short stories (10 thousand words); individual adventures that slot together to explore Mr Adams & Neil’s ongoing adventures Between.  I didn’t want to leave behind these kind of stories after stepping away from the full length Tales, so this is a nice (and not too time consuming) way to continue on in the world.

No clue as to when I’ll start putting them out, but as they’re going to be so short, it could be any time.

Or I might not.

Hey there, nerds; what’s shaking?

SO! I have a book out soon. This book:

It’s the third (perhaps last) in my Tales From Between series, and it’d be nice if some of you jerks bought it, alright?! It’ll be available for your eyeballs early Feb.

But this isn’t about that, this is about my NEXT book. Last year I wrote an 80,000 word sci-fi/apocalyptic novel called Pollen Fall. I decided it would be next thing I would work on and release, so this year I began to tackle the second draft. Then I decided I’d release it as a six part serial, only to change my mind slightly and decide to put it out as three 30,000 word novellas.

And so I worked, I fiddled, I rewrote-

But then…

But then…

…Something wasn’t quite right and it was niggling at me. I suddenly realised what it was: this wasn’t the sort of story I want to tell right now. It had no fantasy, no supernatural, it was sci-fi. It was a riff on a body snatchers/triffids sort of story, and that’s great, I love those stories, but it felt like it was missing a chunk of my voice right now. And my voice is spooky fantasy.

Did that mean I had to abandon the whole thing?!?

Well, no. Stories can change. I realised, looking at what I had, that I could reframe the whole thing. I could add that strong seam of spooky fantasy sauce that would make this story what I felt like it needed to be to please me.

So that’s where I’m at now, jiggering the hell out of the thing to reshape it. As things stand, it’ll be a trilogy of short books, making up one story. I think it’s a good one.

The title is no longer Pollen Fall, I decided to go for something a little more, how you say…slutty…? By which I mean, no fancy pants, abstract title, but something that will highlight, loud and proud, that this might be the sort of thing a type of reader will want to check out. It has the word ‘apocalypse’ in it.

Ooh, yeah.

I have a set edit date, so I’m going to have to work my bum off to get the thing in shape in time.

Did I mention I have a new book out soon?

I’ll let you know as soon as it’s out there; but in the meantime, back to bringing about the GOD DAMN APOCALYPSE!

2016 Goals

Hey there, you dumb, lovely nerds!

SO. New year, time to assess where I am and what I want to do with this prose writing malarkey. After stepping into the author world late last year, I really want to build this year and be in a great place by the time 2016 closes up.

Last year I became a published author (ya-hoo!) and published two novels in my spooky series for younger readers, Tales From Between, and a stand alone horror novelette, Sixty-Six. My aim at the start of 2015 was just to publish something before Christmas, so to get three things out is great.

I sold more than I thought I would, and people said nice things.

Which is nice.

I’m pretty proud of all three releases.

Okay; so what do I hope to get going in this sparkle-fresh new year?

Tales From Between

My first release will be a third title in this series, The Increasingly Transparent Girl. I will then put out a collection which features all three Between titles. After that, I’m not sure… There’s always room for more stories in this series, but it feels like a good moment to stop. Three books, a little collection, then move on to other projects. I was never going to break out with a kids series, but these have been super fun to write, so who knows….

But for now, these three, and the collection, will see me pushing the pause button as I explore a couple of other worlds.

Horror/Apocalyptic Serial

So last year I wrote a full length horror/sci-fi/apocalyptic-I-suppose ‘thing’. After I’m finished with Transparent Girl, I’ll be jumping 100% back into that. But, rather than putting it out as a single novel, I’ve decided to do a little fun experiment and put it out as a serial. 10-to-15 thousand word ‘episodes’ every two weeks.

The idea tickled at me recently, so I gave the first draft a look and saw that it could easily be sliced into six episodes, so I’m going for it. For the second draft I’ll be focusing on each bit as a separate episode and making sure that it isn’t just  a book chopped up, but that each episode is a satisfying ride in and of itself.

So, six episodes, then a collected edition, which will feature an exclusive short set in the world. Hopefully.

Depending on how it goes, there is scope for further stories, perhaps even another ‘season’ like this. I’ll see how I feel about it once it’s all out; if I want to carry on or if I feel like I’m done with it.

I’ll be letting you know more about this series, including its title, very soon.

New Urban Fantasy Series

Well; I suppose strictly speaking you could call it rural fantasy, as it’s going to be set in the hills, lakes and teeny towns of Cumbria, in the far north of England, rather than a big city.

The idea for this (hopefully) ongoing novel series has been bubbling away in my brain-meat since last March. I wanted my own Dr Who, my own Hellboy, and this is about as close to that as I’ve got so far. What can I say about it at this early stage? Well, there may be a witch. And monsters. And SCARY STUFF.

They will be short-ish books, approx 60,000 words each, and each one will tell a stand alone story, but with a little arc going through. Each arc would cover a trio of books, with the ‘arc’ story being the tale that’s told in book three. Then three more books, with new stand alone stories, and a new arc.

I’m hoping this will be one of my big, ongoing series. I’m going to write the first drafts of the first three books before releasing any, so the series will launch at some point in the second half of the year.

Other Stuff

I also have a new novelette already written, and I’ll probably do a third to break up the writing of the first three books in the Urban Fantasy series. If I do, then I dare say I’ll put all three novelettes into a little collection, too.

That’s, uh, a heck of a lot of writing to do. Who knows how much of it I’ll get done, but I’d really like to try to get as much as possible out there. Let’s see…

I have high hopes for 2016, so lets see how crushed I am come Christmas…!
